Makeup Trends 2015

Before we review runway makeup trends 2015, I want to make a couple of points that every woman and man should take into consideration.

Makeup Trends 2015

Makeup neither Practical nor Flattering

makeup trends 2015

Catwalk Makeup

I’ve always looked at hair and makeup since my teens.  Unlike many hairdressers and makeup artists, I knew my career of choice from an early age.  I’m passionate about hair and makeup, and I love fashion. However, what’s right for supermodels coming down the runways might be neither practical nor flattering for us mere mortals.

Buenos Aires tends to be behind the times when it comes to makeup fashion. I’m not too stuck on catwalk makeup that’s here today and gone tomorrow. There’s also the seasonal lags that means spring collections 2015 from the Northern Hemisphere are just about to ‘arrive’ in Buenos Aires when up north they have shown and are already busy selling autumn collections – it can be a little confusing.

It’s always worth looking backwards at seasonal variations and remember, we’ve a grossly humid climate to contend without the benefit of first-world air conditioning.

Makeup a Truly Personal matter

makeup trends 2015

Makeup Very Personal

Makeup is a very personal matter.  Women and men have their makeup habits and boundaries.  As the old adage goes, ‘old habits die hard’.  This expression could not be truer when talking about makeup habits. When advising clients, I’ve often found unflattering makeup application the most difficult habit to break.  Not all makeup styles and colours truly benefit everyone. We have to carefully weigh a number of important factors such as natural hair and skin tones, eye colour, what you intend to wear and the time of day.

Makeup Clones

In earlier articles, we looked at hairstyles and hair colour trends in the northern hemisphere for spring and summer 2015. As always, there’s competition in the market because couture designers, hairdressers and makeup artists seek to differentiate their brands.  That’s good news because it means there’s plenty of room for innovation and personalisation when advising my clients on new makeup trends.

Most importantly, it means we can find a very personal range of colours, application techniques and looks to avoid creating Buenos Aires makeup clones.

Why choose a makeup artist

makeup artistry sicodelica hair art

Sicodelica Colour Studio

Makeup artists can paint using a huge range of base makeup, colours and professional techniques that change the appearance of your skin to transform and enhance appearance.  A makeup consultation at Sicodelica Hair Art Colour Studio Buenos Aires explores makeup habits, how and why you use makeup to play to your anatomical strengths and what you believe (sometimes incorrectly) hides imperfections.

Back to makeup trends 2015

Makeup trends 2015 are varied and interesting.  I’m  going to start with eyebrows and eyes. There’s so much happening on the makeup scene and remember, up north, it’s autumn collections.  I intend to write about lip and skin tones, followed by men’s makeup over the coming week.  Why not join my mailing list to avoid missing follow-up articles.

Aliens & Eyebrows

Eyebrows Makeup

Eyebrows & Makeup

Eyebrows are a little bigger and thicker. Sometimes lighter and/or professionally plucked to reduce their thickness and enhance shape for a super natural look I find refreshing.  I’ve always been a fan of more natural looking eyebrows.  Many designers think that eyebrows should be a little lighter than natural hair colour.  However, the dark hair and blonde eyebrow look is interesting but a tad freaky.  For some odd reason, it makes me think ‘alien’.

Natural looking makeup for that ‘carefree’ fresher face is something I applaud for every day – particularly for busy professionals and/or mums who find face painting means losing valuable time.  Although, don’t be fooled, natural looking makeup still takes time to apply and there’s a couple of neat tricks to make the eyes pop – even when less is more.

I suffer a little from the Argentine disease when it comes to hair and makeup because I love fashion history. Taking trips back in hair and makeup time to the roots of styles and technique rather than just focussing on what’s new always captivates and inspires me. I’m a bit of a purist.

Stop plucking the ‘freck’ out of your eyebrows boys!

mens eyebrows

Men’s Eyebrows

Today’s hair and makeup give us plenty scope to be creative, but how we paint at Sicodelica Hair Art really depends on what we decide works best for you. Already women are asking me for lighter eyebrows.  Many of my clients are sporting fuller looking eyebrows that provide a fantastic frame for their eyes.  However, wandering through Palermo it’s clear that some men are a little behind trend.  Stop plucking the ‘freck’ out of your eyebrows boys!

Eye makeup 2015

eye makeup trends

Eye Makeup Trends

I see eye makeup and adornments designed to make those eyes go pop in big way with lots of smoke and blending looks countered by more subtle makeup and pastel colours that state,  ‘I have no makeup (do really) and I don’t care’.   Makeup trends 2015 are great for women who love conservative makeup days & crazier makeup nights.

This year, the natural and fresh face look with bushier eyebrows competes for supremacy with darker and fuller stylised eyebrows that frame Mary-Quant-like smoky eyes with lots black and brown liquid eyeliners.  I much prefer fuller eyebrows and not the overly plucked fine lines from the Quant era.

Eyeliner is doubled up and/or cat’s eyes effect drawn right into the corners of the eyes and even winged Cleopatra-like. However, eyeliner is used in a range of exciting colours with white, blues, orange, golden browns and even reds.  I loved Max Factor’s Candice goes Marilyn Monroe in April 2015.  I’m not a fan of coco-the-clown undereye makeup extremes, but using a pencil and/or colours with a softer smoky lines of colour can look amazing.

Retro flappers

Eyelashes Mascara 2015

Eyelashes Mascara 2015

Long eyelashes with black and brown mascaras are sometimes extreme. Have you seen the retro flapper-eyelashes look? Again, I love big black and dark brown flapper-eyelashes, but I’m not so keen on the blobby and pointed lashes looks.

Hair Colour Trends 2015

Earlier in the year, it was hard to determine hair colour trends that would characterise 2015 because there were too many front-runners.

Just past this year’s halfway mark Bronde is the new Blonde…

Most clients choose Sicodelica Hair Art Hairdresser Buenos Aires because they know we create natural looking hair colour treatments.

This year, Bronde is the new blonde.  Bronde offers a range hair colours somewhere between blonde and brunette. It’s not blonde and it’s not brunette. Bronde bridges that gap with exciting colours that thankfully give last years bleached blonde hair (often exhausted by discolouration) some time to rest.

Bronde is the new blonde

Bronde is the New Blonde

Last year’s light to medium caramel blondes, meant hairdressers had to discolour hair more than any hairdresser would like.  Progressive discoloration takes its toll on hair and causes some minor damage. You cannot discolour hair without some minor damage.

I always ask people to have a hair treatment after discolouration and then weekly two weeks in advance of their next discoloration. My aim is to ensure the hair is in good condition. Treatments preserve gloss, shine and body. What’s the use of having beautiful colours if your hair does not look healthy?

If you have been blonde for a while, going for bronde hair colours during 2015 with a darker base colour will help give your hair time to recover.  In addition, for the darkest women it means less discolouration and healthier hair.

Bronde Hair 2015

Bronde Hair 2015

I like bronde colours because we have a vast range of darker base colour combinations we can advise to compliment every skin and eye colour. To stop it seeming flat, we add one or a range of lighter bronde shades to frame your face and provide some movement and texture in the hair.

To get Bronde is not an exact technique and the colours we choose will depend on your natural colours, but generally there are three steps.

Bronde 2015 Buenos Aires

Bronde 2015

First we use a permanent or semi-permanent professional colour, there is a fine range of colours from Loreal. We start at your roots with a rich brunette, then fade out with a lighter colour as we work our way down the lengths of your hair. A rich dark colour to lighter colour ranges helps create a soft, natural gradation between the roots and ends.

If you already have blonde hair and we are going darker from roots to ends we’ll add darker to lighter bronde colours to achieve the same effect.

We then tease hair strands with bleach to highlight hair around your face for an ‘eye-popping’ finish. The hair we bayalage or highlight is expertly placed for subtle blonde strands of colour running throughout the hair.

Finally,  we finish with a toner. Toning is important as it helps leave hair feeling conditioned and gives you the exact colour you’re after.

Given the range of colour mixes, you’ll leave Sicodelica Hair Art Colour Studio with something that is bespoke.  We can help you find your colour.

One-dimensional single hair colours…

hair colour trends 2015

Single Process Hair Colour

One-dimensional single hair colour treatments in a range of caramel blondes, brunettes and reds, with or without some subtle highlights to the front of the head or conservative balayage were front-runners by far at the start of the year. I’m in love with riveting redheads.  Although red hair no longer seems like the new blonde later in 2015.

Bigger hair with strong ribbons of highlighted hair is back…

Do you remember Cindy Crawford’s big hair of the early 90s?  It ranged from lighter browns to darker blonde base colours with very strong ribbons of highlighted hair, particularly in the front.

Ombre and balayage are still knocking around, but larger swathes of highlighted hair are definitely making a comeback. It does not look quite so natural but is likely to be high-fashion right into the New Year. However, it is not necessary to dry your hair with your head upside down, bunch or back-comb – not yet!

Having said that, I’m dusting off my oversized rollers and revisiting brushing with natural bristles and hanging hairbrushes because bigger curls that hold their shape for hours may roll across the Rio del la Plata into Buenos Aires sometime very soon.

Don’t forget the fantasy highlights and ends…

Clinica del Color de Pelo

Argentines know how tough it is to obtain products from abroad.  I’m trying to get my hands on permanent fantasy colours appearing in Europe and the USA.  I’m also trialling a new range of fantasy colours by Framesi with my fantasy hair colour clients.  Look at these exciting new colours that we recently introduced at Sicodelica Hair Art, Hairdresser Buenos Aires.  Remember these are new colours and only time will tell if they stand the test of time. However, they cannot be any worse than local fantasy colour brands.

The good news is that with some trial and error, not always adhering to instructions, we’ve managed to maintain good levels of colour in hair for up to 4-weeks!  In addition, for new colours we have no problem providing a touch-up service. Those of you that love the fantasy colour look will already know about the disappointing local pigments. They do not have staying power.

I base my articles on questions asked by my clients day-after-day. If you have questions or any doubts, please write your comments below and I’ll do my best to answer you in a timely fashion.

‘Grow’ Hair Fast- Short to Long Hair in a Jiffy

In my last article on shorter hair trends – Bobs, Lobs, Chops & Braids – I promised some advice on going from long to short hair and how to ‘grow’ hair fast! Short to long hair in a jiffy.

Hair Extensions – Hairstyle Trends

Shorter summer hairstyles mean my clients often want longer hair when the seasons change. Which means more requests for hair extensions during Buenos Aires autumn and winter.

In my last hairstyle trends article, I described the Bob, Chop and Lob.  Shorter summer hairstyles hitting the red carpets in the Northern Hemisphere.

When the weather warms up Sicodelica Hair Art Hairdresser Buenos Aires expect a mini rush for shorter hairstyles.  Although probably not in the huge numbers seen further north on this continent because Argentine women are very protective of their longer hair.

Up north, celebrities who had recently gone for shorter hairstyles during spring and summer are already wearing long hair extensions and they look fantastic.

I read yesterday, “Vanessa Hudgens just got hair extensions”.  The first thing I thought – who is Vanessa Hudgens?   It took me a while.  She is a Disney starlet who had a fling with Zac Efron, then became a singer and now acts.  Thank you, Wikipedia!

Short-Haircut

Vanessa Hudgens Textured Bob

Vanessa Hudgens kind of proves my point. The image above shows beautiful Vanessa with a textured Bob style haircut and below, we see how long hair extensions transform her look just a few weeks later. Vanessa seems to ‘grow’ hair fast! Short to long hair in a jiffy!

Vanessa Hudgens Hair Extensions

Argentines who chop off their long hair often come back for hair extensions later in the year.  I want to give you some good advice and save your hard cash.

To get Vanessa Hudgens hair extensions with a natural looking strand-by-strand process, using either glue or micro-loops, you need 175-200 hair extensions.  Natural virgin hair extensions are very expensive in Argentina.

Quick point: Virgin hair means untreated hair.  I recently received an email asking me why a virgin’s hair is more expensive!  It was NOT a joke!  Poor lad.

You may wonder why buying hair is more expensive in Argentina when compared to other countries.

Visitors and expats often think hair extensions are cheaper in Argentina.  They are cheaper for visitors and expats using the black market to exchange their Dollars, Euros and Pounds for Pesos.  However, quality hair extensions are not cheap when compared to our very reasonable fees for hairdressing services.

Hair is VERY expensive in Argentina when compared to our economy and earnings because women with the longest hairstyles rarely go short. Those that do go for short hairstyles often have treated hair.  I will not use treated hair.  I only buy the highest quality virgin hair.  Supply and demand make natural virgin hair very expensive in Argentina.

If you are not the young man who asked me why I need a virgin’s hair to make hair extensions you are probably thinking why not import cheaper hair.  Ha!  We have a government that has done its best to stop non-essential imports to protect our countries dollar current account (reserves).

Most Argentines are not globetrotting politicians who spend our money in couture shops abroad (most couture brands left our land because of import restrictions) or get to meet the Pope. Most Argentines have to rely on lesser local brands, generally poor quality and expensive.

This is not a political blog, but I think it very important that Argentines put their fear of government aside to tell politicians how their bad management adversely affects our businesses and personal lives.  Even a local hairdresser cannot import what he needs to provide clients with the best possible products available at a reasonable price.

Back to hair extensions: If you decide to go for shorter hairstyle trends, if possible, I will cut your hair free and pay you for your weight in hair, or, I can save your hair (wise move) by turning your tousled locks into hair extensions ready for when you feel like a longer hairstyle.

The day you look in the mirror and wish your hair long again, your wish is my command!

‘Growing’ Hair Fast! Short to Long Hair in a Jiffy takes just four hours with natural looking strand-by-strand hair extensions at Sicodelica Hair Art, Buenos Aires most recommended English-speaking hairdresser.

Bobs, Chops, Lobs & Braids Summer 2015 Hair Fashions

What’s all the Fuss About Bobs, Chops, Lobs & Braids?  Summer 2015 Hair Fashions at Sicodelica Hair Art.  Buenos Aires Most Recommended English Speaking Hairdresser.

Unless you live in a bubble, you can´t have missed the many celebrity Bobs, Chops, Lobs and Braids.

I love summer hair fashion.  When it’s cold in Buenos Aires, I’m forever looking longingly at the red carpets and beach parties in the Northern Hemisphere.

I have many expat clients and tourists that demand hair cutting and hair colour techniques from Europe and the United States of America.  Generally, I see the same hairdressing repackaged, often with new and trendy names with a twist. I find it very helpful to maintain an awareness of the terminology used to describe what’s new and trendy in hair and makeup fashion.

In the past, I found keeping a watchful eye on summer hair and makeup fashion in California and the Côte d’Azur very helpful to determine where the Argentine market might go as the seasons change.  However, Argentines are changing.

Argentines have always been outward looking and deeply attached to their immigrant forefathers’ countries.  Hair and makeup trends always started somewhere else and tended to reach Argentina many months after they were vogue in other lands. Today it is exciting that hair and makeup professionals in Argentina more confident and innovative. Buenos Aires is a trendsetter in Latin America.  I hope that one day Buenos Aires rivals London, Milan, New York and Paris and that I can play a small part in building that awareness.

Albeit, it is always fun to look at what’s ‘hair-happening’ north of this sub-continent and across the chilly Atlantic Ocean. Today we are looking at haircuts and hairstyling trends in North America and Europe. Our focus is on Bobs, Chops, Lobs & Braids; summer 2015 Hair Fashion. Next week I will follow-up with hair colour and makeup trends:

Bobs, Chops & Lobs

Many celebs are going for shorter hair, but not last year’s pixie cut.  We are talking Bobs, Chops and Lobs. The Bob, Chop and Lob are hitting the red carpets on both sides of the Atlantic.

I am a real fan of the high-style classy bob, particularly with the darkest hair colour tones.  Cut straight around the neck, usually to jawline with either bangs or a solid fringe, it’s a style flattering to most face shapes and easy maintenance.

Talking about hairdressing repackaged, often with trendy new names with a twist – I know you are thinking – “Lob?”  Cut in a similar style to the Bob, the Lob leaves the hair slightly longer with the straight cut ends touching the collarbone.

This is good news – because you can have a Bob today, give it a month or two with a trim to tidy the ends and it’s a Lob tomorrow!

Both are uniform blunt cuts with no layers. If you want a timeless, classy and elegant looks that elongate the neck – think Bob or Lob.

The Chop – has a longer, softer and broken textured fringe with light interior layering down to a shoulder length baseline that we tease away rather than cut straight for a much softer line than the Bob or Lob.  I like this cut, it has all the benefits of Bob and Lob, but it’s not going to take an age to grow out.

If you have thin or damaged hair, particularly at the ends, these styles cut away frizzy damage and make your hair appear thicker. There’s also some versatility with braided, curly, textured or tousled looks. We all know the wonderful Bobs from yesteryear. Iconic women such as Louise Brooks and Liz Taylor’s Cleopatra always stick in my mind, hence my love of the darker Bob.

Braids make a comeback, but did they ever leave?

Braids are no longer old fashioned. Braids are making a comeback in some exciting short and longer hairstyles.  I have always loved braids.  My beautiful daughter, Agata Camila, thinks me the braids monster!

I have selected a few modern braided styles from 2015 that demonstrate that braids are for every day, not just important birthdays or weddings.

Adventurous expats have caught the fantasy hair colour bug

In Buenos Aires young, trendy and stylish Porteños (men and women) and a bunch of adventurous expats have caught the fantasy hair colours bug.

Up north and across the Atlantic, fantasy colour hair fashions seems to wax and wane with the advent of each celebrity fantasy colour hairdo.

Colores de fantasía Buenos Aires

However, here in Buenos Aires young, trendy and stylish Porteños (men and women) and a bunch of adventurous expats have caught the fantasy hair colours bug.

Fantasy hair colours do NOT have to look insane or outlandish. Good fantasy colours that play to your personal anatomical colour strengths can rock and rule!

We love clients that want to be trendsetters. People who want us to get creative. Blending and merging exciting new hair colour combinations to create unique hair colour styles makes our professional lives interesting.

That’s what Sicodelica Hair Art is about.  Not my look.  Not just what’s in fashion. My role as Hair Art Director is to advise, sometimes temper, but always help our clients achieve something very personal and flattering. My job is to design haircuts and colours that state, ‘this is ME!’

We have a group of girls and boys booked in for the coming spring that are going to create a ‘fantasy hair colour explosion’.  A colour sensation to celebrate the very important change of season.

Thinking about spring, I am wrestling with my conscience here, what’s more important: a new president that usually means more hardship or the sudden explosion of Jacaranda and Jasmin colours all over Buenos Aires.

las tinturas de colores de fantasía

Don’t you love it when the weather changes and those faceless, well-wrapped and hunched forms suddenly straighten up to become real people?  Our sun puts its hat back on, it smiles and Argentina smiles. To me, that transformation is one Argentina’s most endearing qualities.  I love the spring.

We burst out of hibernation into the parks, the streets and cafes – we are true sun worshippers. The conquistadors certainly lost that war – ancient pagan sun worshipping blood still seems to flow through the heart of Argentina. It is right there at the centre of our flag.

I want to clear up a few misconceptions about fantasy hair colours and respond to the blah-blah I read on Social Media.

More conservative hair colours wash out. All hair colour washes out. If you choose colours nearer to your natural hair colour, it is not so noticeable.

Estas cansada de tener siempre el mismos peinado para las fiestas de navidad y año nuevo

I choose the highest quality colour pigments to mix and match hair colour subject to my own experience to create unique colour variations that last three to four weeks.  It depends on how many times you wash your hair, what you wash your hair with and how porous your hair becomes after discolouration.

Many of us love a burst of fantasy hair colour. It sets us apart from the maddening crowd. Do we want that extreme hair colour for months and months? Of course not.

Here’s the good news.  All fantasy colour clients can come back into the salon for a two-week touch-up every Monday with our colour junior at a reduced price!

When you read rebukes on our social media pages from traditionalists and those boring nay-sayers who troll the Internet, remember, shrinking into the background is about as Argentine as eating dinner at 6’0’Clock, going to a nightclub before midnight or coming home before the sun graces our celeste sky.

Drop in any time for a free hair colour consultation – please book or be prepared for a wait, we run a very busy salon booked 14-days in advance so make your appointment in advance.  Please  do not book the day you are due to arrive in Buenos Aires.
